Jesus Among Us

Yesterday we did a service on Mark 10–marriage and divorce.

Tough stuff.

I preached for a few minutes saying just what Jesus said.  Then I brought a couple of divorced people up on the stages to put some flesh and bone on the text.

I interviewed them for 30 minutes.  They were amazingly transparent and gave a beautiful reminder the world is not really black and white.  They talked about the love of God, transformation that comes only through Jesus and the need for the church to love people going through divorce.

A lady came up to me after the service, pulled my head down to hers and said, “That was ok, but I want more Jesus.”

I think He was among us and she missed Him.

People are content to hear about Jesus. They seem to miss seeing Jesus at work. Whether intentional or unintentional they shut their eyes to Him, because in doing so they don’t feel the sting of their own conscience knowing they are not showing Jesus to the people around them who are broken, hurting and longing for the touch of Jesus.

As someone who has gone through a divorce, I am constantly amazed that many people do not seem to believe that Jesus’ blood could also cover that “sin.” I have come to the place in my life where I simply hide that chapter. Nobody knows. None of the people I’ve met for the past 15 years.
